Why (And How) I Mix Vintage And Modern Pieces

Do you want to know the key to timeless style? Mixing vintage and modern pieces. Yes, it’s that simple! However, when it comes to deciding which pieces should be vintage and which should be modern, that is when it can get confusing. One of the things I do is listen to my heart (as cheesy as it sounds), and what I gravitate towards or love is always what I go for. Many people (myself included) get very nervous about doing the “right” thing when it comes to design. We enjoy parameters and rules because it makes us feel like we know what we are doing. Trust me, I have been there. What’s great about design is that if you go with what you love you will never, ever be wrong. Let me explain with an example:

I fell in love with this tapestry, and I found one similar on Amazon for a third of the price! You can click here to take a look at it. I think when people see something like this tapestry they think it might look "grandma," so they back away from something like this. BUT, and there is a big BUT, you can make it look incredible and timeless when it's mixed with modern pieces. Most of this room is modern, but that one vintage tapestry keeps it from becoming too modern. When you travel too far in one direction (vintage or modern) you start to age your decor, and that's why mixing is so important. Mixing the different styles also gives us freedom to choose that "grandma" ottoman or tapestry or whatever it is because when we know that we will put a modern piece next to it, then it will never look like our great aunt's sweater or our grandfather's favorite blanket. Let's take a look at another example:

Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent are masters at mixing vintage and modern (this is a picture of their home by the way). Their taste and style is timeless and why they keep on keeping on (not to mention that they are extremely talented as well). And you know what? You can do this too! If you lean towards a more vintage look, then for every three pieces of vintage try to put one modern piece in the mix, and the same goes if your taste is more on the modern side. I almost don’t want to even give you those parameters, so if it helps then take it and run with it, and if it doesn’t, throw it in the trash and buy what you love. I hope this helps, and send me pictures of all of your mixing!

Love,
